Understanding nanostructured materials by X-ray scattering and the potential of the new beamline CoSAXS at the MAX IV Laboratory

The Center for Photon Science at Uppsala University invites you a seminar series over zoom on some of the scientific opportunities at MAX IV presented by beamline scientists.
Structural and dynamical studies of relevant soft and hard matter are driving most of the recent efforts to understand complex and multifunctional materials. Among different characterization techniques, Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) is a key method to characterise the nanostructures formed. Size, shape, orientation, state of aggregation and interaction between the scattering objects can be characterized by the technique. Synchrotron SAXS in low emittance sources like the 3 GeV ring of MAXIV laboratory in Sweden  provides unique opportunities to study complex and heterogeneous systems over a broad range of simultaneous length (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 103 nm) and time (10-6≤ t ≤ 104 s) scales.
In the presentation, we will shown the project CoSAXS , the first scattering beamline at MAX IV laboratory, including desing, technical and scientific targets and first encouraging results from commissioning activities of the optical components. The initial plan for the commissioning activities with expert users will also be presented.
In addition to the instrumentation results, we will shown scientific highliths which used synchrotron SAXS experiments as a main technique to characterize nanostructured materials [3-6] and can be further explored at the CoSAXS beamline.
